Description: The Superb Fairy-wren is known as taeraeaer, a reference to its cry, in the Dhauwurd Wurrung language of the Gunditjmara people. They are found amongst trees and low cover across the Budj Bim landscape. Gunditjmara hunters used blue wrens and other small birds to lure emu and bustards. A live blue wren was secured to a length of wood held by the hunter, whose fluttering attracted the bustard or emu’s curiosity. The hunter concealed his approach towards the distracted prey by carrying a brush shield through which the lure protruded. When nearby, the hunter used a wooden club or noose attached to a wooden stick to kill the bustard or emu.
